Success if Making it as an Artist in New York City
Library Events - VPL
Location: Central Library, 350 W. Georgia St., Alice MacKay Room
The 54th Langara College Community Lecture series & VPL invite you to a lecture by Denise Panchysyn. In 1953 a young, penniless Jasper Johns arrived in New York. His cool, deadpan paintings of targets and numbers were a complete departure from the macho and gestural paintings of the reigning Abstract Expressionists who dominated the art scene. By 1955, Johns' show at the Castelli Gallery sold out and he landed on the cover of Art News. This illustrated talk examines those early years of Jasper Johns in New York and the milieu of supportive artists, dancers and musicians who challenged a generation. (Free admission. The Age of Pretence: Reflections on Post-Modernism
Library Events - VPL
Location: Central Library, 350 W. Georgia St., Alice MacKay Room
The 54th Langara College Community Lecture Series & VPL present a lecture by Martin Toren. We consider some of the trends of the post World War II period: for example, the decline in deference to authorit; the casual approach to dress; in art and architecture, "the courage to challenge good taste", the "dumbing down of society." These and other trends are part and parcel of Post-Modernism. What is behind these trends? Is there any coherence to Post-Modernism? (Admission is free. Seating is limited.
