Community Information: Vancouver, East Side

Are you thinking of buying a home on Vancouver’s East Side? Here is community information to help you.

The City of Vancouver is divided into East Side and West Side at Ontario Street (near Main Street). East Vancouver has a diverse mix of ethnic groups and household incomes vary greatly. Traditionally made up of working class neighbourhoods, in recent years there has been an influx of young professionals, especially in the trendy Commercial Drive and Main Street areas.

For more demographic information, visit the BC Stats Web site .

Housing and Zoning

Housing prices are lower then in adjacent Vancouver West neighbourhoods, making it popular with professionals who want to be close to downtown but can’t afford the higher West Side prices. For current house prices see our Market Tracker.

New houses are starting to replace older, single family homes and both residential and commercial development is increasing, especially around the area’s SkyTrain stations. Champlain Heights in the southeast corner of the city is an example of mixed housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, housing for seniors and co-ops.

Older "character" houses can be found throughout the area, especially in the neighbourhoods of Mount Pleasant, Main, Fraser, Commercial Drive, East Hastings and Strathcona.

For more information see the City’s Planning and Land Use Department.

Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

East Vancouver has many exciting shopping districts. One of the trendiest spots is "Antique Row" located on Main Street, between 14th and 33rd Avenues. It features antiques and country-furniture shops and a wide variety of ethnic restaurants, coffee shops and cafes. Further South is the vibrant Punjabi Market at Main and 49th.

Commercial Drive, known locally as ’the Drive’, is home to a large Italian, Portugese and Latin American population. This eclectic shopping and dinning district has a myriad of restaurants, cafes, shops, theatres and galleries, making it a natural gathering place.

Chinatown, near downtown Vancouver, is another bustling shopping district. Experience the many restaurants, specialty shops, and theatres showing Chinese opera and film.

Parks and Recreation

Most residents live within an easy walk of the many parks and recreation centres in East Vancouver. You can swim, walk and bird watch at Trout Lake, visit Playland at Hastings Park or enjoy the park-like setting of historic Mountain View Cemetery. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden located in Chinatown.

For more information visit the City of Vancouver Parks and Recreation site.

Transportation

Downtown Vancouver is only a 10 to 15 minute drive from most areas of East Vancouver. Access to many bus routes, 3 SkyTrain stations and several bikeways, makes it easy to get around without a car.

Education

East Vancouver is part of the Vancouver School District.
